In this outrageous, irreverent, and touching memoir, Sam Cox describes a life of independent wanderlust, illustrating what it means to adapt and survive life’s greatest obstacles. His is a frustrating and stifling beginning, the fourth of five children living with poverty and domestic strife in Lubbock, Texas. The community is fervently religious and judgmental, and this is nowhere Sam wants to live. At sixteen years of age, he finds a free ride out of his personal hell on a freight train, and he heads all the way to the Pacific. And that’s only the beginning. From hotshot firefighter to Hollywood actor to Saudi prince bodyguard to freelance writer for Jay Leno, this is a man of many lives and experiences who offers colorful commentary on everything from religion to the Vietnam War to life-saving organ transplants. Even when things turn very dark, he faces his life with humor and a sheer will to succeed. Cox’s inspiring memoir is a living example of how to stand by your convictions and face challenges with courage and humor, no matter how dire the circumstances.

I have actually known Sam for almost 20 years now, as he was my comedy coach. And yet until I opened his book, I didn't really know anything about him. I thought I did, but man was I wrong. The book was written so vividly (and Sam is a relentless note-taker) that once I started reading I finished it in 2 days, only breaking to sleep. I knew he had done the LA thing, was familiar with the Comedy Gym history (as a student), spoke with him numerous times when he was going through his major health issues and divorce (and was kinda angry at the world), and heard about him hopping trains as a youth. But i never got to see the whole picture and hear the expanded stories. So glad I got this book and was able to see a side of this man that I love and admire. I give it 5 stars not only out of friendship, but the fact that I literally could not put it down till it was over. My 2 gripes about the book are that: A. It had no ending or even any semblance of one. It just stopped mid-section. Leaves you feeling like someone tore out the last few pages. And B. Sam did not really include much of the humor he is actually known for. This did not bother me as much as gave me hope that the follow-up book (which I know he is planning) will include plenty. Hopefully with my review, I've left him no choice! As a teacher, I learned from Sam how to write, think, and perform comedy from my life. As an author, I learned how to live.

Boxcar Tourist How I Screwed My Nut eBook Samuel Ray Cox Kristine Louise Korn Reviews
I was a student of Sam's Comedy Gym back in the early 2000's. When he would cut out entire sections of my "jokes", I remember thinking that this old, white guy simply didn't understand what I was trying to convey with my comedy. But it didn't take me long to realize that, not only did he understand what I was trying to do, he understood what I didn't; the audience (i.e. people). Now, after reading this modern day Sam Clemensish memoir, I see where all of his insight comes from, real life experience. I've always considered Sam a true friend but now I consider him an inspiration! Kudos to The Lone Wolf and don't worry Huckleberry lives in that Texas size heart of yours!!
This one kept me reading start to finish. It's a life told in vignettes, virtually every emotion you can think of laid out in front of you. Sam Cox lived the kind of life we sometimes dream about, with all the pain, danger, and joy that goes along with that. Read the book. You won't be sorry.
Boxcar Tourist by Sam Cox is a fun and easy read. This Texan’s experience and stories made me feel as if I were there; sharing the excitement. Sam is an excellent storyteller and his nutty adventures gave him something to share.
A sharp wit from a country boy finding his way through great places of tales venturing across an amazing Americana of freight yards, casting call lines in Hollywood, firefighting in California’s Sequoia National Forest, the travails of show business and finally his ability to survive life threatening illnesses, ending up in hospitals and falling in love unexpectedly. This is a tale of survival by means of a sense of humor.
Every life has its adventures but not everyone can tell about them with such skill and vivid descriptions. What an entertaining story about a life that has been perhaps a tad more adventurous than most, told my the man who has lived it. One gets the sense that Sam Cox has lived on the edge but always with an inner compass that guided him through even the darkest and most dangerous moments on his journey. He makes choices from the heart and his heart has led him "home", time after time. Good read! Thanks Mr. Cox and Ms. Korn. What's the next chapter in this story?
Reading Boxcar Tourist gave me a much needed mental vacation. I certainly didn't want it to end and felt let down when it did. Ultimately, I am hoping that a director reads it and creates the magnificent film that it could be. One of my favorite lines in the memoir is in the chapter of old time religion when he expresses "There was nothing more intimidating or embarrassing than having an erection while standing to sing God's praise."
This is a fun and fast read. Sam tells his stories as they happened with great visuals and spares the reader from too much rambling. It's a memoir written by a guy who (spoiler alert) survived two organ transplants and brain damage, I'd give him credit just for getting the spelling right. I enjoyed this book because its an easy to read tale of a guy who didn't take the traditional route. At a young age he sprinted face first in a direction most people only fantasize about walking toward. Texas farm boy, train hopper, wanderer, hippy, ladies man, actor, rebel, firefighter, music tour manager, stand up comedy coach, father and survivor.
I couldn't help drawing a parallel between his hitching rides on trains when he was young and when he found himself all those years later riding the city bus to his hospital appointments after he was struck ill. In both cases he could only wonder what lied ahead of him, but he kept moving forward in spite of the obstacles. The book ends abruptly and that might rub some people wrong. Maybe Sam wanted it that way. Sort of like hopping a train, taking a ride to wherever it goes and jumping off in parts unknown. I recommend Boxcar Tourist to anyone with an adventurous heart.
one star taken off for such an abrupt ending! wanted to not have it end and wanted to learn more about this man...I thought this was well-written and fun...never having known anyone "famous" it was a hoot to read about all his encounters with the well-known among us...his life has been an action movie filled with thrills and spills...I think we need a second book to bring us up to date though...and just who is the mysterious Ms Korn who helped write this tome and yet isn't mentioned anywhere in the book?!?!?!? hmmmm!
